Why was it neccessary for Constantine to stop the mistreatment and murder of Early Christians?

Why didn't early Pagan Rulers do it? Why did Constantine make it illegal to unfairly target Christians.|||They did. Constantine was not the only one with a soft spot for early Christians. Read your history a little better.|||It wasn't "necessary" -- it was a political decision.

Constantine saw a modified form of christianity as a potential religion he could use to unite (and control) his empire. He was quite shrewd. He brought it in slowly -- first by forbidding persecution, later by official endorsements, buildings, etc. He even faked a "vision."

Interesting, though, that he didn't actually become a christian until just before his death...

Peace.|||ACtually it might actually have been the worse thing that ever happened. The church began to water down after the persecutions ceased.|||%26gt;%26gt;Why didn't early Pagan Rulers do it?%26lt;%26lt;

I guess pagans weren't as gentle and tolerant as some believe.|||Because he became one? And then he started mistreating pagans, and it's continued since then in that fashion.|||He was getting old, and didn't want to be burned by the christians, so he converted to their side, and became friendly with them.|||because stone cold said so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
